Born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Butch was raised by his grandmother until age 15, when he moved to a farm in northeast Nebraska to live with his uncle. As a child, he loved playing sports and dreamed of becoming a firefighter and traveling the world. Unbeknownst to him at the time, a neighbor in Scottsbluff who was in the Navy would later influence his future path. Butch was a good student and earned a college scholarship but soon realized that was not the right path for him.In 1962, Butch and a friend enlisted in the United States Navy. Following basic training, he pursued further specialized training in Illinois. He graduated as an engineman and a firefighter, having received extensive instruction in the operation of assault boats.After serving on the USS Noble in the Westpac until its decommissioning, Butch was sent on tours to Vietnam to deliver supplies. He advanced through the ranks to E-4, a role that allowed him to fulfill his dream of seeing the world. Read more
